Artificial intelligence (AI) will affect every aspect of psychology. Assessment, intervention, education, and research are a few of the areas that are already touched by AI. Chatbots can make therapy more accessible and less expensive. Programs have been developed that will listen to therapy sessions and create progress notes. However, chatbots also spread misinformation, have professed their love to users, and sexually harass minors. Currently, technology has outpaced the thoughtful and ethical use of these tools. This workshop will explore the ethical implications of AI in psychological practice. Participants are invited to discuss ethical dilemmas from their own experiences and there will be opportunities for workshop participants to practice ethical decision making skills from the material covered.

National initiatives to prevent suicide in youth have called upon pediatric specialists in schools, primary care, and elsewhere to lead screening and prevention efforts. Upticks in youth reliance on social media, and more recently AI, as a way to independently manage suicidality has underscored need for clinicians to increase their understanding of how youth, particularly adolescents, engage with these platforms. As such, this training will provide an overview of adolescent suicidality rooted in the interpersonal theory of suicide, summarize what is known about the current intersection of social media, AI, and suicide, and culminate in practical ways to assess technology use during intake to inform prevention efforts among teens.

Join us for an advanced 3-hour APA CE workshop for psychologists, mental health professionals and educator who want to move beyond basic telehealth compliance and sharpen their clinical judgment in virtual care. Using APA’s 2024 telepsychology guidelines, current research, and complex case vignettes, participants will examine competence, consent, documentation, privacy, interjurisdictional practice, clinical fit, emergency planning, tele-assessment, supervision, and equity in digitally mediated psychological services.

Linda K. Knauss, Ph.D., ABPP is a Professor Emerita at Widener University’s Institute for

Graduate Clinical Psychology. Dr. Knauss is the Past-chair of the American Psychological

Association’s Ethics Committee, the American Board of Professional Psychology’s Ethics

Committee, the Pennsylvania Psychological Association's Ethics Committee, and has served as

Co-chair of the Philadelphia Society of Clinical Psychologists; Ethics Committee. Dr. Knauss

taught courses in ethics at Widener University, Immaculata University, and the Philadelphia

College of Osteopathic Medicine. She has authored several book chapters and journal articles on

ethics and has taught many continuing education workshops on a variety of ethical issues. Dr.

Knauss maintains a private clinical practice where she sees children, adolescents, adults, and

families.

Karen Schwartz, PhD, is a clinical psychologist, researcher, and educator whose scholarship focuses on developing evidence-based depression and suicide prevention programs for youth and families. Dr. Schwartz’s work emphasizes programming for parents to help them support children and adolescents through key life transitions that can increase stress, uncertainty, and emotional distress within families. By providing emotional support, education, and practical skills, her work aims to prevent depression and suicide while promoting long-term well-being across multiple areas of functioning.

With more than 15 years of experience in research and direct clinical practice, Dr. Schwartz brings expertise in psychopathology and evidence-based care to her private practice, Approach Behavioral Health, and the training of aspiring providers in the Master’s of Counseling program at Arcadia University. Her teaching and mentorship are grounded in a commitment to preparing clinicians to provide

Dr. Schwartz earned a PhD in Clinical Psychology from the SDSU/UC San Diego Joint Doctoral Program in Clinical Psychology, completing the Experimental Psychopathology Track with a Child/Adolescent Concentration. She also holds an MS in Psychology from San Diego State University and a BS in Psychology from the University of Pittsburgh, with minors in Neuroscience and Music.

Introductory

Program design builds on foundational understanding of an emerging area of knowledge.

This workshop provides psychologists and allied professionals with a practical, ethics-centered framework for delivering telepsychology in a manner consistent with APA telepsychology guidance and PSYPACT requirements. Participants will examine how telepsychology changes clinical decision-making, informed consent, privacy, documentation, emergency planning, and interjurisdictional practice. Special attention will be given to verifying client location, determining whether the psychologist is authorized to provide services across state lines, understanding Home State and Receiving State responsibilities, and documenting telepsychology decisions in a clinically and legally sound manner.

The course also addresses telepsychology with children and families, particularly cases involving behavioral concerns that may make clinicians uneasy because they cannot physically control the treatment environment. Participants will explore the clinical, ethical, and risk-management considerations involved when working remotely with children who present with aggression, tantrums, impulsivity, elopement risk, noncompliance, ADHD-related behavior, autism-related behavioral challenges, or caregiver-management concerns. The workshop will emphasize how telepsychology can be both a strength and a limitation: it allows psychologists to observe family dynamics in the natural home environment and coach caregivers in real time, while also requiring careful attention to safety, caregiver readiness, privacy, escalation planning, and appropriateness of remote care.

Through case examples, discussion, and applied planning exercises, participants will learn how to determine when telepsychology is appropriate, when hybrid or in-person services may be indicated, and how to prepare parents or caregivers for successful child-focused sessions. Practical guidance will include how to structure the physical environment, position cameras, reduce distractions, manage safety risks, clarify caregiver roles, develop backup plans, and document clinical rationale. By the end of the workshop, psychologists will be better prepared to use telepsychology thoughtfully, ethically, and effectively with diverse clients, including families whose presenting concerns require careful environmental planning and active caregiver involvement.

Maleita Olson, LCSW, is a co-founder and current Chief Operating Officer of Spectra Support Services, LLC. She is a licensed clinical social worker in PA. During her 30 plus year career, she has worked for in community-based, institutional, government and medical settings, with a primary focus on serving individuals with developmental disabilities and their families.

Maleita has a master of social work degree from Boston College Graduate School of Social Work. She is a certified clinician with the National Association for the Dually Diagnosed (NADD). She is a frequent presenter at local, state, and national conferences on topics related to autism spectrum disorder, the transition to adulthood, and impacts of disability on the family.

Maleita lives in Springfield, PA with her husband and teen and young adult children, three of whom are neurodivergent. She is a past president of ASCEND: the Asperger and Autism Alliance for Greater Philadelphia and a member of the National Association of Social Workers, the Arc of Delaware County, the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities and the Autism Society of America.

Identify core APA telepsychology practice domains, including competence, informed consent, privacy/security, documentation, emergencies, interjurisdictional practice, clinical appropriateness, and emerging technology considerations.
Apply PSYPACT concepts to clinical decision-making, including APIT, E.Passport, Home State, Receiving State, client physical location, psychologist physical location, and Receiving State scope-of-practice obligations.
Develop a telepsychology-informed consent and emergency protocol that includes technology risks, privacy limits, backup communication plans, local emergency resources, caregiver roles, and documentation requirements.
Evaluate the clinical appropriateness of telepsychology for children with behavioral concerns by weighing access, ecological validity, parent coaching opportunities, safety, privacy, caregiver capacity, escalation risk, and need for in-person care.
Instruct parents/caregivers in preparing the telepsychology environment to improve session safety, behavioral containment, privacy, engagement, and clinical usefulness.
Document telepsychology sessions in a manner that reflects location verification, jurisdictional considerations, technology used, consent, disruptions, safety planning, caregiver involvement, and clinical rationale.
