What You'll Learn

This webinar prepares music therapists to integrate active, music-based mindfulness interventions into the daily routines of individuals with co-occurring intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health conditions. Moving beyond passive or seated meditation models, mindfulness is presented as an adaptable, music-centered clinical tool grounded in evidence-informed practice. Participants examine mindfulness-based interventions alongside principles of interpersonal neurobiology and polyvagal theory to strengthen nervous system regulation and guide clinical decision-making. Through case examples, experiential learning, and guided practice, attendees develop practical, trauma-responsive strategies that promote emotional regulation, resilience, and overall well-being.

The following learning objectives outline the specific clinical knowledge and applied skills participants will gain through this training.
  • Summarize the benefits of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs) within music therapy for individuals with co-occurring intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health conditions. (CBMT Domain: 5A-4)
  • Apply principles of interpersonal neurobiology and polyvagal theory to guide clinical decision-making and treatment planning for individuals with dual diagnoses. (CBMT Domain: 2C-1)
  • Design developmentally responsive, music-based mindfulness interventions using active approaches such as sensory engagement, bilateral movement, cognitive tasks, and experiences that foster connection with self, others, and nature. (CBMT Domain: 2B-5)
  • Implement person-centered, trauma-responsive interventions that promote emotional regulation, resilience, and overall well-being in individuals with co-occurring I/DD and mental health conditions. (CBMT Domain: 5B-14)
