Purchase Autism & Suicide: Risk Factors & Prevention Strategies
Multiple studies confirm that persons with a diagnosis of Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) demonstrate an elevated risk for multiple suicide-related outcomes (i.e., suicide death and suicide attempt) in comparison to the non-autistic population. This workshop reviews how
biological and social/environmental differences contribute to risk factors. We will also explore distinctions in the warning signs for suicide as well as the use of traditional and recent tools for conducting an accurate risk assessment for this population. Finally, resources specific to supporting the ASD population and their mental health will be provided. (1 CE)
Law & Ethics Issues Impacting Persons with ASD and other Developmental Disabilities
Ever wonder about the legal and ethical implications of providing therapy for those with developmental disabilities? This workshop will explore the history of the civil rights of persons with disabilities that have led to our current laws and protections on both a state and federal level. The workshop will also review the often misunderstood spectrum of decisionmaking capacity of these individuals from the individual, personal, social, and legal standpoints. The distinction between guardianship and power of attorney in PA will be presented as well as the process of appointing substitute decision makers, should they be necessary. The ethical
implications of providing psychotherapy to those with substitute decision makers will be considered. Finally, we will demonstrate the opportunities for mental health professionals to play key roles in advocating for this population with a goal of moving away from discrimination and stereotypes to assist persons with developmental disabilities to live their best lives.
