Evaluation and Use of Diagnostic Manual-Intellectual Disability 2: A Textbook of Diagnosis of Mental Disorders in Persons with Intellectual Disability
COMING SOON!
About the Session led by: Maleita Olson, LCSW
In 1983, Dr. Robert J Fletcher founded the National Association of Dual Diagnosis “in response to a growing need for a forum to educate the professional community regarding the realities and unique needs of those with dual diagnoses and to address the absence of research, information, and access to effective services for people experiencing co-occurring intellectual/developmental disabilities and behavioral health needs.” After collaboration with clinical experts, the DM-ID (Diagnostic Manual-Intellectual Disabilities) was published as a tool to use along with the DSM (Diagnostic Statistical Manual) in 2007 and updated for a second edition (DM-ID2) in 2017. The second edition included both the manual and clinical guides and workbooks to educate clinicians on its use.
This workshop will explore the history and needs that existed that resulted in the development of the original DM-ID. In addition, the manual in its current form DM-ID2 and the supplemental tools available will be carefully explained and discussed to demonstrate their potential usefulness. Participants will have the opportunity to review actual case studies and practice the diagnostic framework being presented. Participants will walk away with additional knowledge about the need for distinguishing the potential source (intellectual disability versus comorbid psychiatric condition) of symptoms and behaviors being observed.
